Barefoot Truths

Why do we spend our whole lives looking toward the horizon when happiness begins beneath our feet?
There is something peculiar that almost all of us do.
When we dream, we look into the distance.
Toward the horizon.
Beyond the sea.
Beyond the mountains.
Into the future.
As if everything beautiful were waiting somewhere ahead of us.
As if happiness were a place we would one day arrive at.
But the horizon has one curious quality.
It never comes any closer.
Whether we take a thousand steps or a million, it remains just as far away.
And yet we devote our whole lives to it.
Perhaps that is why we have grown accustomed to believing in the word “when.”
When I have more time.
When I become braver.
When I earn more.
When the children grow up.
When I stop being afraid.
When the moment is right.
And yet life does not know the word “when” at all.
Life exists only in one single moment.
The one that is standing beneath our feet right now.
One paradox comes to mind.
We spend our whole lives looking toward where we are going.
And yet we almost never see the place where we are already standing.
We chase summits.
Goals.
The next steps.
But we rarely thank the steps we have already taken.
I have rarely heard anyone say:
“Thank you to the journey for changing me.”
We thank only the destinations.
As if the journey were nothing more than the distance between two points.
Yet it is the journey that shaped us into the people we are today.
Strangely enough, our feet have known this all along.
Every day they carry us.
Through joy…
Through fear…
Through loss…
Through new beginnings…
Across places we would never want to return to.
And across those we wish we had never had to leave.
They do not remember only the miles.
They carry every one of our returns.
Every decision we have made.
Every moment when we found the courage to take the very first step.
And yet we almost never look at them.
Perhaps that is strange.
We spend our whole lives standing on something to which we give the least attention.
Perhaps that is why happiness was never hidden at the end of the road.
Perhaps it has been quietly waiting within every single step.
In the moment we allowed ourselves to slow down.
When we sat barefoot on the porch.
When we let the wind speak instead of us.
When we stopped looking at the clock.
When, for just a moment, we stopped rushing somewhere.
It is remarkable that our most beautiful memories are rarely connected to where we arrived.
But rather to how we felt while we were there.
Perhaps that is why some people travel the entire world…
and still feel that something is missing.
Not because they visited too few places.
But because they were everywhere…
except where they were standing.
It is possible to stand on the most beautiful beach in the world…
and still be thinking about Monday.
To sit beside the person we love…
while thinking about everything we did not get done.
To watch a sunset…
while spending the whole time wondering how it will look in a photograph.
How many moments have we truly lived?
And how many have we merely prepared for our future memories?
Perhaps the greatest distance in the world is not between cities.
Nor between continents.
Perhaps it is the distance between our feet…
and our attention.
Because while our bodies have already arrived,
our minds are still somewhere along the way.
The longer I observe life, the less I believe that happiness is a reward.
I believe instead that it is the way we touch life.
The ability to be where we are.
To notice the ground that carries us every day.
The people walking beside us.
The silence that asks for nothing.
The moment that will never come again.
Because perhaps the greatest tragedy is not that life passes us by.
Perhaps it is that we spend our whole lives walking through it on our own two feet…
without ever noticing what it is we are actually walking upon.
And perhaps that is why we keep looking toward the horizon.
Not because happiness is there.
But because we have come to believe that everything important must be far away.
Yet life has a peculiar sense of humor.
It often hides what is most precious in the place we look the least.
Beneath our own feet.
That is where every step begins.
Every return.
Every embrace.
Every act of forgiveness.
Every new beginning.
And perhaps we spent our whole lives searching for happiness somewhere ahead of us.
While all along it was patiently waiting every single day…
for us to finally look down.
And if you have read this far… thank you. 🤍 Perhaps, for just a moment, you stopped looking toward the horizon.
Dedicated to everyone who sometimes feels they are still not far enough.I hope the day comes when you stop measuring your life by how many horizons you have chased.
And begin measuring it by the moments in which you were truly present.Because perhaps the horizon was never a place we were meant to reach.Perhaps it existed only to teach us, one day, to lower our eyes…
and discover that the most beautiful things had been quietly carrying us beneath our feet all along. 🤍

One thought stayed with me while reading this.
Perhaps the horizon is not there to keep us moving forward, but to gently remind us to return to what has always been carrying us.
Some of the deepest journeys begin the moment our attention comes home.
Thank you for this beautiful reflection.
🌺 Loved this because sometimes moments are all we have, sometimes moments are everything.
